* The Parable of Mercy*

Return to the outline archives (listed by topic) here.

Luke 18:9-14

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Question: Do you recognize the need for Mercy?
Tell testimony of John Newton who was a slave trader before conversion. Though his name is not recognized, his song is “Amazing Grace”.
We witness God’s grace and mercy in this Parable of two men who went up to the temple to pray, but only one left a changed life.
If you are saved, ask yourself if we have become like the Pharisee “I thank thee that I am not as other men are”.

[Notice three thoughts in this Parable]

(1) The Reason
(2) The Redemption
(3) The Result

1. The Reason

Why did Jesus give this Parable?
(Verse 9)
-
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
1st man - a Pharisee : very religious outwardly, he practiced the law, he lived a certain way.
  He was not a drunk
  He was not an adulterer
  He tithed
  He prayed
But, he trusted in his works, not in God.
Matthew 5:20 - For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 6:2,5,16 - 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
What are you trusting to go to Heaven?

2. The Redemption

(Verse 13) - And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
The word “merciful” is a adjective form of the same word that is used for “Mercy Seat”.
Note : Share O.T. on the Mercy Seat and Priests entering Holy of Holies with the blood of innocent sacrifice.
Hebrews 9:11-14
11
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Mercy can only be received thru Jesus Christ.
Acts 4:12 - Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

3 The Result
(Verse 14) - I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Ephesians 2:4 - But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
The Publican cried out to the only who could justify him.
Acts 13:39 - And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
All sin, for all time, for all people was paid for at Calvary.
