* Judas - The Man Who Betrayed the Savior*

Return to the outline archives (listed by topic) here.

* In studying for this I found out that the name Judas means "Praise of Lord". There are those names similar: Jude and Judas
* His surname was "Iscariot". A surname is meant as an additional name to be distinguished from a Christian name
(see Luke 22: 1-6).
* "Iscariot means "A Man of Murder".
* Judas was the only one of the twelve who was not a Galilean: Which means from the Northern Palistine.
* Judas acted as the treasurer for the disciples.
(John 12: 4-6 and John 13: 29)
* Interesting to note: The word "betray" means to deliver up and that is exactly what Judas did. "He delivered up Jesus", yet it was the Plans/counsel of God. (Acts 2: 22,23)
* Judas stands out as one of the most hated of men, but also the most Mysterious: Why was he chosen?
* The only answer any can give is found in
Matthew 26: 56 "that the scripture of the prophets might be fulfilled".

[Seven Thoughts Concerning Judas Iscariot]

1. Judas' crime was predicted
  (Psalm 41:9)  (Psalm 109:5-8)  (Acts 1:16)

2. Judas' bargain was foretold
  (Zechariah 11:12,13)

3. Judas became a devil incarnate by his action
(John 6:70) * Just as Jesus is God incarnate

4. Judas is called the Son of Perdition - meaning "Hell"
  (John 17:12)
 * Some believe that Judas will be the Anti-Christ, based on (II (Thessalonians 2:3)
5. Judas betrayed Jesus with a Kiss
  (Matthew 26:47-50)  (Luke 22:47,48)
* How wicked his heart that he would use one of the greatest signs of affection - a Kiss.

6. Judas was the receiver of Divine Patience
  * All we can do is marvel at the Love and Patience of Jesus Christ as He ministered with Judas for 3 years. He knew all along that this so-called disciple would betray Him. Yet even as His enemies came to take Him, He called Judas "Friend".

7. Judas went to his own place
  (Acts 1:18-20,25)
* I believe Jesus would have shown mercy, but Judas did not seek it.

Note: How tragic, that it is possible to be associated with Jesus, to hear His words, to witness His wonderful works, yet refuse Him into our hearts.
